What is cryptocurrency recovery?

Cryptocurrency recovery typically refers to the process of regaining access to or retrieving lost or inaccessible cryptocurrency assets. This can happen due to various reasons such as:

  • Lost access to wallet
  • Forgotten wallet password
  • Hacking, ransomware, or theft
  • Online exchange shutdown or insolvency

Cryptocurrency recovery can be a complex and challenging process, often requiring technical expertise and legal assistance, especially in cases involving significant amounts of funds or instances of fraud. Users are advised to take precautions to secure their cryptocurrency assets and to use reputable wallets and exchanges to minimize the risk of loss or theft.

Critical Fault’s Dogecoin Origin Story:

How we cracked an old Dogecoin wallet to land the capital to start Critical Fault.

Critical Fault’s origin story actually begins started a Dogecoin recovery story. Our physical security expert, Jordan Caldwell purchased $250 worth of Dogecoin in 2014 as a fun project, but lost access to the wallet in 2017 due to ransomware, specifically the Cerber ransomware virus.

In 2021, at the same time Dogecoin was starting to peak in pricing, our CTO, Kris Wall, learned about Jordan’s Dogecoin and the ransomware situation. With a background in digital forensics and hacking, it was a trivial matter to recover the Dogecoin wallet from the unbootable laptop. After recovering the wallet, we found that there was actually four different wallet files. Each were valid wallet files and could be used to access the same Dogecoin account.

Fortunately, the Dogecoin balance was untouched since 2014, and the full (and sizable) amount was still there. The Cerber ransomware is known for stealing cryptocurrency by stealing wallet files. And the only thing that would stop the ransomware from emptying the account would be if the wallet files had a strong password attached.  Luckily, Jordan did place a strong password on the wallet files.

Unfortunately, Jordan couldn’t remember the exact password that was used. However, he could remember possible passwords, aka candidates. Using these candidates, we built a Dogecoin cracking system and began the processing of trying every possible variant and permutation of the candidates that Jordan could remember.

The first wallet file was not successfully cracked. Nor was the second or the third. However, the last and oldest valid wallet file was successfully cracked. We attempted over 8 billion guesses for possible password permutations on this wallet file alone and finally found that a working password that allowed us to decrypt the wallet file and access the funds.

And just like that, the three co-founders had the capital we needed to leave our jobs and found Critical Fault.

How Do I recover a Cryptocurrency Wallet?

hardware

Have you lost access to your cryptocurrency wallet?

We can help, but here are the first steps to make sure you increase your chances of a successful recovery.

  1. If your device has a virus or ransomware, shut it down now. Pull the power or turn off the device. Viruses and ransomware will often encrypt or steal cryptocurrency wallet files.
  2. Make a backup of your cryptocurrency wallet file. Put it somewhere safe and secure, where no one else can possibly access it.
  3. Try and find any possible passwords that may have been used to encrypt your cryptocurrency wallet file.
  4. Contact a trusted expert that can help you protect or recover your wallet file.

And most importantly

Do not share your cryptocurrency wallet file or the password with anyone that is untrusted and/or does not have a legally binding contract in place to protect and your cryptocurrency. There are many scammerss out there that would gladly steal your cryptocurrency wallets and disappear never to be seen again. Don’t be the victim of such a scam. Once the crypto is pulled from your account, there is no way of getting back.

Recovery Is Not Guaranteed

Given the multitude of problems that can arise with cryptocurrency wallets, it is important to understand that recovery of a wallet or password can not be guaranteed. Experts like ourselves will try our best and always act in good faith, but every recovery should be seen as a best effort.
